Meet Robin Chambers.

It is my pleasure to host today’s RRBC Pay it forward blog, for a really supportive and talented member of RRBC, Robin Chambers. Robin’s Twitter page is always full of news, about novels from various authors. It’s a privilege to tell you more about his own work today.

Young Robin

Author Robin was born a long time ago, in the middle of the Second World War, a few hundred yards from Gladstone Dock.

For a brief period in the early seventies, while Robin was Head of English at Hackney Downs School, he had tried his hand at writing stories.

Robin finally got round to writing again for children 17½ years after retiring from teaching in order to be able to do so. Between January 2011 and October 2012, he wrote pretty much eight hours a day, seven days a week. The first four books in the Myrddin’s Heir series emerged… See photos below.

Book 1. Description.

“Gordon Bennett was born on 7th August 1999 with extraordinary powers. Where have those powers come from? Who – or what – is “Zack”…? His mother begins to notice that Gordon is different when he speaks his first words at just 5 months old and that’s before the really strange things begin to happen!

Fun, refreshing and certainly different, A Wizard Of Dreams is Book 1 in The Myrddin’s Heir series by author Robin Chambers. Written at a quick, entertaining pace it’s a potent blend of magical intrigue and adventure and whilst the theme is familiar, Chambers has a unique style of writing that sets his work apart. Much more than a trite fantasy plotline his young protagonist is defined in a realistic and empathetic way that pulls the reader through the story with him, and when Gordon interacts with Zack there is always much to be taken from these well observed exchanges. With well-defined characters, Chambers demonstrates a meticulous eye for detail that makes them instantly identifiable and whilst some are more endearing than others they are all very memorable. Each captured with a distinctive tenor that adds greatly to the thematic undertones of his tale. A tale that not only entertains, but encourages thought and timely reflection.
Original and highly engrossing, A Wizard Of Dreams is a wonderful read throughout and sets the tone for a series that undoubtedly deserves your attention. It is highly recommended.”

Key events in childhood indicate Gordon’s powers are getting stronger..

Review:

In A Wizard of Dreams, the erudite Mr. Chambers gives the reader a story that combines fantasy with a love of the environment, a subject very close to my heart.

This tight novel follows Gordon from infancy to the age of twelve. He is intelligent, imaginative, thoughtful and sensitive in more ways that one. In other words, he’s magical. Not only that, he’s in touch—literally—with his spirit guide, Zack, and together they learn and grow while tackling some serious issues: bullying, death, loneliness, and even the question “where did I come from?” Along the way Gordon also discovers he has telepathic and telekinetic abilities, which come in handy during his and Zack’s adventures. I particularly enjoyed the dream sequences where they visit the land of the Fey, their exploits with the Knights of old, and I absolutely loved the voyage on the Starship Velociraptor where Zack portrays Mr. Spock and Gordon, of course, is the captain. What little boy—or big boy for that matter—wouldn’t want to captain a starship? I won’t tell you what they uncover on the planet of the gorillas, though. It’s best if you find out for yourself.

The story comes alive when the family ventures to the Welsh countryside on Gordon’s twelfth birthday. One of my only critiques of the novel is that I wish I’d reached this point sooner because it is here that Gordon meets his true destiny. He discovers his ancestry and that his magical abilities extend far beyond what he suspected. As the title suggests—Myrddin’s Heir Book 1—Gordon finds out he is heir to a magical world that we mortals know as Avalon, and that he is descended from the ancient Celtic gods of Tir Na Oog. Gordon has greatness

  1. WOW, Lizzie! This is a great post for Robin who deserves all the support we can give him because he’s an extremely active and supportive RRBC member.
    Loved the baby pic!! 😀

  2. Those Penguin and Granada cover pics from the 70s are delightfully dated now, aren’t they? What tectonic changes have occurred since those early days when you could send a bunch of stories straight to Penguin, and if they were any good they published them! Thanks for featuring me, Lizzie. Seeing the same names in the comment lists for these PIF blogs persuades me that there is something a little soi-disant about this exercise! (but it is nevertheless great fun, and a few of us get to know each other a little better). 🙂

  3. What a marvellous post for Robin, Lizzie. I really love the cover images for The Ice Warrior and Shadow of the Pit 😀
Thanks for having us over today 🙂
