It is my pleasure to host today’s RRBC Pay it forward blog, for a really supportive and talented member of RRBC, Robin Chambers. Robin’s Twitter page is always full of news, about novels from various authors. It’s a privilege to tell you more about his own work today.

Author Robin was born a long time ago, in the middle of the Second World War, a few hundred yards from Gladstone Dock.

For a brief period in the early seventies, while Robin was Head of English at Hackney Downs School, he had tried his hand at writing stories.

Robin finally got round to writing again for children 17½ years after retiring from teaching in order to be able to do so. Between January 2011 and October 2012, he wrote pretty much eight hours a day, seven days a week. The first four books in the Myrddin’s Heir series emerged… See photos below.

Key events in childhood indicate Gordon’s powers are getting stronger..

Review:

In A Wizard of Dreams, the erudite Mr. Chambers gives the reader a story that combines fantasy with a love of the environment, a subject very close to my heart.

This tight novel follows Gordon from infancy to the age of twelve. He is intelligent, imaginative, thoughtful and sensitive in more ways that one. In other words, he’s magical. Not only that, he’s in touch—literally—with his spirit guide, Zack, and together they learn and grow while tackling some serious issues: bullying, death, loneliness, and even the question “where did I come from?” Along the way Gordon also discovers he has telepathic and telekinetic abilities, which come in handy during his and Zack’s adventures. I particularly enjoyed the dream sequences where they visit the land of the Fey, their exploits with the Knights of old, and I absolutely loved the voyage on the Starship Velociraptor where Zack portrays Mr. Spock and Gordon, of course, is the captain. What little boy—or big boy for that matter—wouldn’t want to captain a starship? I won’t tell you what they uncover on the planet of the gorillas, though. It’s best if you find out for yourself.

The story comes alive when the family ventures to the Welsh countryside on Gordon’s twelfth birthday. One of my only critiques of the novel is that I wish I’d reached this point sooner because it is here that Gordon meets his true destiny. He discovers his ancestry and that his magical abilities extend far beyond what he suspected. As the title suggests—Myrddin’s Heir Book 1—Gordon finds out he is heir to a magical world that we mortals know as Avalon, and that he is descended from the ancient Celtic gods of Tir Na Oog.
