Val Penny. This week’s Top Author.

How are  you all today? I’ve finally sent the third round of edits back to my editor and have some time to work on book two of my new romance series. I can’t wait to show you all the cover designs when they are ready.

This week it’s my pleasure to showcase the work of another author and to offer them some support. Val penny is a brilliant writer who is the author of a page turning series of detective books. Once you start the first book in the series, you’ll find yourself drawn to the next book straight away.

Val Penny’s crime novels, Hunter’s Chase Hunter’s Revenge, Hunter’s Force Hunter’s Blood and Hunter’s Secret form the bestselling series The Edinburgh Crime Mysteries. They are set in Edinburgh, Scotland, published by darkstroke. Her first non-fiction book Let’s Get Published is also available now and she has most recently contributed her short story, Cats and Dogs to a charity anthology, Dark Scotland.

Val is an American author living in SW Scotland with her husband and two cats.

Some 5 star reviewer praise for Val’s work:

‘Gripping, Fast Paced Crime Thriller, with a sprinkling of Humour!’

‘I have a new hero: Detective Inspect Hunter – tough when needs be but with a soft centre.’

From, Val Penny:

2020 was a strange year all across the globe. I am, by nature a gregarious person and the restrictions placed on socialising because of the deadly coronavirus were as difficult for me as for everybody else. However, I was lucky. I am an author, and I spent the year writing two books, the non-fiction Let’s Get Published and the fifth book in The Edinburgh Crime Mysteries, Hunter’s Secret. I also made contact with a narrator to arrange for the first book in the series, Hunter’s Chase, to be made into an audio book. It will be out by the end of March 2021.

Hunter’s Secret book blurb:

Detective Inspector Hunter Wilson is called to the scene of a murder. DCs Tim Myerscough and Bear Zewedu found a corpse, but when Hunter arrives it has disappeared, and all is not as it seems.

Hunter recalls the disappearance of a dead body thirty years earlier. The Major Incident Team is called in but sees no connection – it is too long ago. Hunter is determined to investigate the past and the present with the benefit of modern DNA testing.

Tim has other problems in his life. His father, Sir Peter Myerscough, is released from jail. He, too, remembers the earlier murder. There is no love lost between Hunter and Sir Peter. Will Hunter accept help from his nemesis to catch a killer?
Hunter’s own secret is exciting and crucial to his future. Will it change his life? And can he keep Edinburgh safe?

Secrets from a book launch.

Happy new week everyone.  How are you? It’s been a hectic few days here, as my latest romance book, The little ice cream shop by the sea, launched. It’s been fun as I’ve been chatting online about ice cream, people’s favourite flavours and about how many of us wish we could be beside the sea and bathed in sunshine right now. The next best thing is a book full of laughter and romance by the sea!

Some of the interesting flavour combinations that have come up, are Pistachio, honeycomb, fig, lavender, coconut, peanut butter, banana caramel, or dark chocolate. Also some sorbets with alcohol, like Prosecco and cranberry or blackberry. You can join in that chat here on Twitter. My favourite combination is coffee and lemon!

It’s very strange  holding a book launch during lockdown. This is the second one I’ve done now, and I have been overwhelmed by the support of my network. This book has reached #1 in more than one category and is now an international bestseller, so I can’t thank you enough for reading, sharing social pages and telling your friends and family about it.  I’ve had people who have never seen my books before, share posts about it with friends too, which I’m very thankful for.  It’s wonderful to meet new readers.

A few things I did for my launch, in case it can help any other authors, are listed here:

  1. I planned my launch weeks ahead of time and scheduled in some social media posts and graphics, so that I had time to chat to readers all day.
  2. I posted photos of my genre and topic and engaged readers in chat about it. The topic I decided on was food, as my book is set in a beachside restaurant. This was a lot of fun as I’m almost as obsessed with food, as I am with books!
  3. I asked other authors and book bloggers if they would mind hosting my book on launch day. (Booking a tour with a professional service in advance is a great idea too. I didn’t do that this time, but often do).
  4. I posted similar book graphics to Pinterest, Instagram, Twitter and Facebook and ran a prize giveaway.
  5. I engaged in chat on launch day in book groups.
  6. I scheduled a newsletter to my subscriber list and ran a unique giveaway just for my subscribers.

I hope this helps and that if you have downloaded the book or bought a paperback, that the story fills your days with sunshine.  Genie, Ada and Cal were a lot of fun to write about and I’m now thinking about the possibility of writing a sequel.

Have an amazing week everyone.

Happy new week everyone. I’ve been feeling a bit low over the last week, trying to meet publishing deadlines and fulfil other commitments. There is a lot of Christmas cheer around, which is wonderful, with fairy lights adorning houses and Christmas carols playing on the radio, but our boiler is broken so our toes are a bit frosty right now. I think i’m missing working with my mum, who I haven’t hugged since March. Even though I work on my own a lot of the time, i’m feeling – as i’m sure is everyone else in the world – the loss of chats over a table with friends. This photo is from two years ago and is Christmas lunch with the lovely Chelmsford Romantic Novelists’ Association  members.

There is light at the end of the tunnel, with news of vaccines and possibilities that we may be able to be together again soon, so i’m trying to shake off the procrastination and find my usual enthusiasm. Writing these words onto paper helps me to focus on what I need to achieve this week. There are lots of exciting things on the horizon, with at least three new fiction books out next year, The little ice cream shop by the sea (out March 2021), Invisible Woman (out July 2021) and the third title will be revealed in the run up to launch day in May.

David P Perlmutter. Top Author Of The Week.

4

Today’s top author of the week is an author you probably already know well. His books are so popular that they regularly sit at the top of the bestseller lists. David P. Perlmutter is also working on a book to movie project at the moment which means we will see his work as a movie sometime soon!

About David:

I have a led a very colourful life, with some episodes so noteworthy that so far they have produced three thrilling true stories, with more to follow.

Away from writing and along with my girlfriend, who is also my editor, I am a volunteer Cancer Campaigns Ambassador for Cancer Research UK, and have done many charity book signing events, to raise money for a cause that is very close to my heart.

I have four children and a grandson and I’m very close to my large family who feature in each of my books.

I started to write my first book when I lived in Portugal in 2013. I now live in London. The book, WRONG PLACE WRONG TIME, has been a #1 BESTSELLER on Amazon around the world, with many hundreds of 4 and 5* reviews. The story is based on true events that happened to me when I visited Marbella in 1991 and ended up wrongly arrested for arson and manslaughter.

I’m very excited to say that the book is currently being turned into a screenplay with a view to it becoming a movie in the very near future, which is every author’s dream and something I could never have imagined when I began writing.

Another of my true stories is called FIVE WEEKS, about a trip I made to Pennsylvania, America for five weeks of training for a new job. I won’t give too much away, apart from saying that I was nearly left for dead in a Pennsylvania wood, and that’s after having a gun in my back in London.

My most recent book, also a true story, follows my escapades as a 21 year old, seeking fame and fortune in America. Entitled 24 HOURS IN NEW YORK, the clue is in the name as to the duration of my stay.

Away from writing true stories, I also write self-help books for indie authors. There are eight books in the MY WAY series, the majority being guides to self publishing and book marketing, the others featuring authors from around the world in various different genres.

All details of my books can be found on my website: www.davidpperlmutter.com

Sometimes life can be bittersweet . . .

Between tending to the whims of her seven-year-old and the demands of her boss, Viv barely gets a moment to herself. It’s not quite the life she wanted, but she hasn’t run screaming for the hills yet.

But then Viv’s husband Andy makes his mid-life crisis her problem. He’s having an affair with his (infuriatingly age-appropriate) colleague, a woman who – unlike Viv – doesn’t put on weight when she so much as glances at a cream cake.

Viv suddenly finds herself single, with zero desire to mingle. Should she be mourning the end of life as she knows it, or could this be the perfect chance to put herself first?

When life gives you lemons, lemonade just won’t cut it. Bring on the gin!

It’s normal for your washing machine to get more action than you, right?

I wake up, bleary-eyed. It’s been two years, six months and three hours since I last shaved my legs, and the llama-patterned knickers I’m wearing have seen better days.

We have seven minutes before the kids wake up, and my husband shuffles closer. ‘Ouch,’ he says, a piece of Lego sticking into his back.

Then, a light comes on in the landing. Small footsteps creep down the stairs. A little voice screams, ‘IS SOMEONE COMING TO MAKE BREAKFAST?!’

All hope of having some ‘alone time’ is replaced with wondering if we’ve run out of Cheerios, thinking about the overflowing laundry, and remembering that I forgot to take out the recycling. Again.

Just a typical Monday morning for the Morton family…

Except today, when I go downstairs in my dressing gown, I find something. Something belonging to my husband. Something that definitely wasn’t in the wedding vows. And it’s either going to make us… or break us.

Today I’m going to tell you about the second book I wrote, Love’s Child. This book has been updated for 2019 and has a shiny new cover! The story is about love, family and friendships and staying together in tough times. It has some feisty characters and was great fun to write. My main character is called David Love. He has had a rough upbringing and wants his pregnant girlfriend Tilly to have the life he didn’t as a child. He runs a club for teenagers to channel aggression into productivity and his life changes dramatically when his club hits the headlines for the amazing work he is doing. This brings new people into the club and they try to discover a secret that David has harboured for a long time. It also puts Tilly in danger and David has to step into a glamorous world full of multi-millionaires, to make sure she and his baby survive.

Dreaming of romance.

I’m about 30k into writing my 8th romantic comedy book and I have to spend a lot of my time dreaming of romantic scenarios and describing gorgeous men. It’s a hard job, but someone has to do it! My latest character is in her forties and has had a troubled past, but she’s so feisty that she constantly makes me giggle about what she’s getting up to next.

I don’t know if it is the same for all writers, but my mind is full of the constant chatter of characters and I don’t often know what they are going to do until my pen hits the paper. I have chapter guides and full character descriptions, but I then just sit down and write.

I’ve also been making a few more memes this week and thought I’d share a couple, as I should have been doing a higher word count each day but managed to fit in some procrastination. I’ve just completed a book tour with Rachel’s Random Resources and as usual it was run beautifully and I was lucky enough to find new readers and see amazing reviews. A big thank you to the tour hosts who take time to post, share, read and review books, just for the love of books. You are all incredible and as an author, it’s heart warming to chat to people who are so passionate about writing.

Have a great week everyone.

cropped-IYLMIY-Covers.jpg

Hello everyone. It was such a weird weekend for me. My daughter was at a festival for the weekend and the hotel had a mix up with the booking so they couldn’t get in, which meant a mad dash across country for me and another one of the mums to be with our children. We managed to get most of them a room for the night, but I ended up sleeping in my car! It was freezing, and not my best idea ever, but everywhere else was sold out due to the huge festival. I finally got in at 2 am this morning, after leaving at midnight the evening before, but it ended up being a hilarious road trip. It gave me ideas for another book! This was us, sleep deprived, but still smiling.

IMG_1808.jpg

I haven’t posted a Monday Marketing post for a while as I’ve been busy with some writing projects. I came across this article recently and thought it might be helpful for anyone who is trying to gain more followers on BookBub. BookBub is a wonderful place to promote books and to find a wider audience. If you are an author and haven’t made profile there, it’s worth taking the time to do. I also did a Booksweeps promotion with lots of lovely romantic comedy writers recently and I now have many more newsletter subscribers, which is fabulous! I have sent the winners their books (pictured above this post) and can’t wait to hear what they think of the story.

On a side note (I’m so excited!), after my BookBub feature, my book, If you love me, Im yours, has risen to the number #1 paid bestseller spot in one of it’s categories and is ranked 89 paid overall in Australia, 136 overall in Canada and 882 in the U.K! A big thank you to everyone who downloaded a copy for just 99p/99c. You can still grab a copy today here.
