Like most writers I’m a complete bookworm. I was born in Uganda and came to England when I was six. I could already read when I started school, but unfortunately everything I’d learned about England had come from Janet and John books. I found going to school in Yorkshire was very different – and completely bewildering! Books were a great solace as I adjusted to the cold and the strange accent. Since then I’ve moved house many times, but certain books have always come with me. I’m in the process of moving to a much smaller house at the moment … and having to get rid of some beloved books has been a traumatic process!
I live near Saltaire, on the edge of the Yorkshire moors, and I find walking the landscape with my rescue dog is a great place to think up ideas for my own novels. Besides writing women’s fiction, I also spent a lot of time last year researching the lives of women in Halifax, West Yorkshire, for a historical non-fiction book that will be released on 28th February. Researching these women’s lives has been an eye-opener and, from feeling an outsider when I first arrived here as a child, has made me feel even more firmly fixed in my adopted home in Yorkshire.
