Happy Monday everyone. This week I’m posting a special post for friend and fellow author, Harmony Kent. Harmony has a new book coming out soon, which is the sequel to Interludes, a book of short stories of erotic fiction. Buy your copy today!
Over to Harmony:
Thanks so much for having me over at your place today, Lizzie.
Hi everyone. It’s great to be visiting with you all.
While I’m here, I’d like to talk about my latest book, Interludes 2. This is a book of short erotic romance fiction. As with the original Interludes (which you can find HERE), the book contains 10 short stories, with the first tale totalling 1,000 words, the second one totalling 2,000, and so on up to 10,000 words in the final story.
For each story, I used prompt cards from a great creative tool called Storymatic. Here’s what the set gave me to work with:
- a) deaf person
- b) recluse …
- c) person in love … conflict = class reunion
A and B relate to the main character. C relates to the secondary character. And the final prompt gives us the conflict.
From the above set of prompts, I came up with REUNION—A contemporary romance in 9000 words.
A school reunion looms. Not wanting to arrive sad and single, Molly talks her long-time friend Paul into going with her. While the music plays, the sparks fly.
Excerpt from Reunion:
She reached the lounge doorway at the same time as Paul. Though they stood just the door-width apart, the distance between them felt as vast as the Atlantic basin. Molly didn’t think she’d ever felt so awkward in her entire life. Paul stood with the tray held high, as if to hide behind it. Molly took a couple of steps backward and motioned for him to precede her into the room.
Varied emotions crowded in, overwhelming her brain. She tried, desperately, to sort through her feelings and thoughts. To understand just what was happening here. A dull headache built behind each temple, and she squeezed the bridge of her nose with her eyes tight shut for a moment. How to proceed? She and Paul stood on a knife-edge, and if either one of them slipped right now, their life-long friendship would sever irrevocably.
Slump-shouldered, she walked slowly into the living room on heavy feet. Paul sat in an armchair, gripping a hot coffee glass as though his life depended upon it. Molly sighed. This whole thing just felt so juvenile. They weren’t silly teenagers, for goodness sake. She bit down on her ire and tried to view this from Paul’s perspective. Somehow, this catastrophe was linked to whatever had happened to him during those lost three years.
I had so much fun writing this one, and I hope you’ve enjoyed this little teaser. I’d love to hear what you think via the comments at the bottom of the page. Thanks for stopping by.
